Cosmetic Crowns & Bridges

cosmetic crowns

Crowns or ‘caps’ have been used in dentistry for a very long time. They are usually used to strengthen a tooth that may be heavily filled, root filled or damaged. They are also used to improve the appearance of teeth and sometimes to improve the alignment.

A crown can also be used to close spaces or replace a missing tooth or teeth. This is normally known as a dental bridge. Essentially a bridge is several crowns joined together that fit over the teeth adjacent to the space / missing tooth. Another type of bridge consists of a gold wing that is bonded to the tooth adjacent to the space. This is called a Maryland bridge and is often used when the occlusion (bite) is favourable and when no tooth removal is required to support the bridge.

Crowns and bridges can be made from different materials. They can be made of gold or a mixture of alloys, or from porcelain or composite material. Often a porcelain or composite crown is regarded as more aesthetic.

Sometimes you may have seen when someone smiles there is a black line or mark above their tooth. This is a crown made from metal and porcelain known as a porcelain bonded to metal crown. Often if this crown is removed and replaced with an all porcelain crown the dark line will disappear. This is due to the way that light hits the crown.

There are many different types and makes of crown. There is no one ideal crown they all have their own merits and indications.

A crown is an irreversible process as tooth has to be removed to create space for the new crown. This is important to remember when considering treatment, especially if alternative less destructive options are available. Also crowns will not respond to tooth whitening, so if you are considering have a crown or many crowns you may want to think about whitening your teeth first.

At myFACE we will guide you in choosing the ideal crown or treatment for your needs.

With modern technology crowns and bridges can be made to look very natural and blend in with the rest of your teeth, so that no one will identify which one is the crown.
