Tooth whitening is still one of the most popular treatments to improve one’s smile. It has been around since early Roman times, when urine was used to whiten teeth! Tooth whitening does not remove the stains from the teeth, but actually camouflages them, so that they become unnoticeable for a period of time; usually around 2 years.
myFACE offers both in-surgery tooth whitening and professional take-home tooth-whitening kits with custom-made trays. Both procedures are based on a bleaching process that uses either hydrogen peroxide, or carbamide peroxide depending on sensitivity of teeth. Take-home whitening kits can often provide a longer lasting effect with less sensitivity then in-surgery whitening. Some people experience no pain or sensitivity with their teeth. However, it is common to experience some degree of sensitivity when whitening your teeth. The discomfort will subside once tooth-whitening treatment is stopped. Special toothpastes can be used before, during, and after treatment to help to combat this.
It is important to understand that tooth whitening will not whiten fillings, crowns, bridges and dentures. So if you are considering whitening your teeth, you may need more dental treatment to match your existing restorations to your new pearly white smile.
The amount your teeth will whiten varies from one person to another, much like getting a sun-tan. It is also genetically pre-determined and it may be that your teeth will just not whiten that much. Some people (yellow teeth) may respond very well to tooth whitening and consequently have radically whiter teeth, whereas others may in fact notice very little difference in teeth colour (grey teeth/tetracycline stained teeth).
